In my Iced Tea & Sweet Tea blog post HERE, almost a decade ago, I presented early mentions and recipes for Ice/Iced Tea, and it’s popularity in Russia in the 1840s. An Ohio cookbook in 1876, Buckeye Cookery, contained a recipe for “Iced Tea” that was sweetened when hot – Sweet Tea. The often mentioned Iced Tea recipe in Housekeeping in Old Virginia, 1878 added sugar with ice, so really not Sweet Tea (seems much sweeter when added to hot tea, than cold). An even earlier Iced Tea recipe was in a medical magazine, 1869 “slightly sweetened.” Drinking tea with ice was becoming popular in the summer from at least 1860. Also: Cold brewing, green or black teas, and even “Ice Tea” as a euphemism for Brandy.
