More and more talks provide the option to buy a box of samples (beer, alcohols, tea) or ingredients to make along with the talk. Starting Oc 9, Plimoth Grist Mill (yes, the one with the Mayflower) will have a virtual mill tour then 3 more dates making cornbread, Indian Pudding and pancakes using its cornmeal, which can be picked up or shipped. It is a great way to support small businesses, and small businesses (ie. cheese shop; tea shop) are even presenting virtual talks.
There are several series this month not on my original Sept. calendar list, plus 25 new talks. The Masterworks of Japanese Tea Culture discusses one tea service object in each of its six 75 min. sessions, held by the Nikkei National Museum in B.C., Canada. The next object is the iron kettle (Se 20) then tea bowls, tea scoop, cold water jar… The British Library’s Food Season has 14 digital events through Oct 20 including Jewish Food, a talk by Claudia Roden and Simon Schama on the Hebrew Manuscripts exhibition in the British Library (Se 21). List of some of the 40+ virtual talks (25 I've just added since Se 1) are below.
Now back to my post subject on tie-ins -
Museums. Many months ago... in May, Princeton University Art Museum
promoted a specially designed menu from a downtown Princeton restaurant La Mezzaluna for pickup and wine pairings from next door Public Wine, Beer and Spirits to enjoy with their talk "Food and Drink in Italian Renaissance and Baroque Art." I wrote at the time - What a great idea! Coming up on Oct 4, the Getty Museum will host "Nourishing Genius: Food and Wine in the Time of Michelangelo," which includes a list of wine and food to buy locally and enjoy while watching.
Beer. By the end of July breweries were shown as parts of a talk, or the focus, such as "Women brewing beer in Rwanda" or the Allagash Brewing Co (uses old Italian wine jars for one of its beers) in an installment of PennMuseum series "Ancient Alcohol tour and beer tasting" during which Philly Loves Beer curated a six pack of beers (with clever beer drinking games) at the end of Aug.
Order items before talk. Not only pickups of alcohol, but packages of ingredients to make-along, samples to taste and even equipment are made available to order from small businesses beforehand. In a recent talk on Sri Lanka, the pan to make Hoppers could be ordered from Hop and Roll. in England.
Formaggio Kitchen, a cheese and specialties store in Cambridge (Boston MA) has been giving classes and pairings, but now has several talks ("Micro classes") each month on a different cheese (cheddar is the first) with a selection of samples to pick up at the store. $5 for talk, more for the samples.
Friday Afternoon Tea (shop in Seattle WA) has done numerous programs, and has started a Fall Tea Education Series: talks on Teas (savory and sweet), Teacup history, and interestingly on The Silk Road (globalism and imperialism through trade) among others. $15 per talk, no samples.
Tour companies have lost revenue from tourists and have been giving talks. A "Teotihuacan History and Food Tour" this week (Sat Se19) by Impact Travel Collective (to "travel with a positive impact") will support guides on a tour of the Mexican pyramids, a restaurant (discussing and making old foods) and a chocolateria with the $20 donation/fee. I'll 'be' there!
